The new Arts and Social Sciences Complex 1 at Simon Fraser University reinforces the strong east-west organizational axis, established by Arthur Erickson. Hinging off the NE corner of the Academic Quadrangle, the two-storey complex covets a centrally landscaped courtyard, and provides spaces dedicated to Forensic Science, Criminology, Archaeology and First Nations Studies. Laminated timber mullions complement the concrete moment frames located along the corridors. Prevalent use of solar shading devices reduces solar gain in the summer months. At the exterior, the strong horizontal datum of the pre-cast concrete panels gestures to the elegance of the grand Academic Quadrangle.
