Calgary, Canada

This residential study was commissioned by an owner wishing to test fit zoning possibilities on a consolidated lot in the Ramsay neighbourhood in East Calgary. The zoning study addressed the possibility of re-zoning the property to M-CG (Multi-Family-Contextual at Grade) and increasing the density on site as per the local bylaws. The study proposed six detached residential units arranged on the site, while providing a central, collective outdoor space. Green space and gathering space could both be accommodated. The 2 storey residential units occupied approximately 60% of the site area while still allowing the potential for onsite parking.

R840 Multi-Family Retrofit https://cbstudioarch.com/portfolio/r840/ https://cbstudioarch.com/portfolio/r840/#respond Wed, 26 Oct 2016 20:57:06 +0000 http://www.cbstudioarch.com/?post_type=portfolio&p=220 R840 Multi-Family Residential Retrofit
Calgary, Canada

Canadian cities are speckled with the 60/70s iconic structures with sloped roofs and split levels known as duplexes. R840 is a prototype for the transformation of an iconic duplex form into fresh multi-family residential units. Rezoned under MCG meant a new lease on the potential of the structure and site. Four units have been developed that propose either 2 bedroom/2 bath or bedroom/den/2 bath possibilities. The kitchen, living and dining areas are all open concept. Upper level units have balcony access while lower level units have private backyards. The sustainable goal would be retrofitting more duplexes instead of tearing them down. The scale and layout of original duplex design still speaks to good simple living.

Hamlet of Lac Des Arcs, Canada

In the small community of Lac des Arcs, Alberta, a 600SF cabin was a weekend refuge for a family for over 35 years. In order to create a new permanent residence, 1800SF was added to the original structure. The 2-storey addition introduced an open concept living/kitchen area on the upper floor, and guest rooms on the lower floor. The 1960s cabin was converted into the master suite. Large south facing windows capture the dramatic Rockies while a stone hearth establishes a central gathering place. The new hearth mimics a smaller hearth in the original cabin. A glulam beam spans the living area with linear clerestory windows allowing a diffuse natural light.

Saskatoon Duplex https://cbstudioarch.com/portfolio/saskatoon-duplex/ https://cbstudioarch.com/portfolio/saskatoon-duplex/#respond Sun, 16 Oct 2016 19:24:52 +0000 http://www.cbstudioarch.com/?post_type=portfolio&p=243 Saskatoon Duplex
Saskatoon, Canada

This semi-detached residence was proposed for the Riversdale neighbourhood in Saskatoon. As a dwelling prototype, the intent was to showcase a cost-effective approach to green living and generate positive community redevelopment. Each efficiency unit provides 1300SF of living area on two floors. The ground floor includes a living room, den and an island kitchen. The second floor offers three bedrooms. The massing shifts slightly to accommodate privacy screening at the front and back porch areas. A linear clerestory window spans axis of the roofline, allowing diffuse natural light into the spaces. The sustainable materials include corrugated steel and marine grade plywood. A spacious yard at the rear allows for a potential communal garden.

Calgary House https://cbstudioarch.com/portfolio/renfrew-house/ https://cbstudioarch.com/portfolio/renfrew-house/#respond Sun, 16 Oct 2016 17:14:20 +0000 http://www.cbstudioarch.com/?post_type=portfolio&p=203 In a quiet neighborhood, a 688SF post-war dwelling required an addition that could service a growing families needs. The design sought to address numerous code issues in the existing house and complement it with a 1200SF addition on 3 levels. The new bar building hugs the site’s Northern edge and South facing windows allow natural light to permeate the spaces on two floors. The new living area provides a communal space with a fireplace and directly accesses a deck that extends out to the yard, Shading from an exterior balcony reduces solar gain. Bedrooms and a Master Bathroom constitute the second floor. A new entry vestibule provides a transition from the street to the existing dwelling.
