cbstudio architecture and a team of Engineering Consultants were engaged by the Calgary Board of Education in February 2021 to undertake a Facility Condition Assessment of Centennial High School. Centennial High School is an extraordinary place. The school was designed as a prototype for the evolving concept of a large high school. The layout of the building is exceptionally functional with the majority of functions and programs organized around a 2 storey central circulation spine, or street. The overall quality of the building’s interior spaces are good with each individual program area having its own character and identity while also working together with the larger whole. The 17 year old school is located at 55 Sun Valley Boulevard SE Calgary, Alberta, houses grades 10 – 12 and is +/- 15,200 m2 in area. The scope of work, beyond the assessment, included the preparation and coordination of the 200+ page report, code and egress reviews, as-built CAD drawings and the preparation of the Life Cycle Costing info for the Cost Consultants.

cbstudio architecture and a team of Engineering Consultants were engaged by the Calgary Board of Education in 2021 to undertake a Facility Condition Assessment of Crescent Heights High School. Crescent Heights High School is a unique and special place. The interior of the building represents almost a ninety year plus span of changing scholastic appearances, materials and programming representative of a large high school. The overall quality of the building’s interior spaces are primarily due to the clarity of character of each individual building and the exceptional way in which they were all woven together like a tapestry. Each individual building maintains much of its original character and identity while also working together with the subsequent additions. The school is located at 1019 1st Street NW in Calgary, Alberta, houses grades 10 – 12 and is +/- 31, 785 m2 in area. The 2 and 3 storey structure was built in a series of additions and renovations, starting with the original structure in 1928 and being completed by an Elevated Gymnasium and Classroom Addition in 1985. The scope of work, beyond the assessment, included the preparation and coordination of the almost 700+ page report, code and egress reviews, as-built CAD drawings and the preparation of the LCC info for the Cost Consultants. Two non code compliant stairs, leading to the Facility Operators Offices, also required replacement.

Calgary, Canada

Services: All Phases: Concept Design – Construction Administration

With the largest aging population in Canadian history, the numbers of retirees requiring residential facilities has never been higher. With this comes an increasing need to refresh and maintain existing facilities while still providing services. The Royal Park residence in Calgary shares the building with another retirement home that had coveted the original commercial kitchen. Royal Park required a new commercial kitchen, freezer and food services manager (FSM) office. Phasing the work was critical so a temporary servery was created first to utilize while the kitchen upgrade and freezer were completed. Subsequently, the servery became a sports lounge with a new integrated café/bar and FSM office. Accessible washroom upgrades, a mail area and a general refresh of collective areas was also part of the scope.

Services: All Phases: Concept Design – Construction Administration

With the largest aging population in Canadian history, the numbers of retirees requiring residential facilities has never been higher. With this comes an increasing need to refresh and maintain existing facilities while still providing services. The Eau Claire residence in Calgary required deep upgrades to their two dining rooms. The 8th Floor Dining Room and Nursing Station had been carved out of a residential unit. A full upgrade was completed that included a service kitchen, coffee station, dining area and custom nursing station. The Main Floor Dining Room was dated and dark with a castle theme. Small economic refinements modernized the space subsequently. The upgrade included refreshed main and private dining rooms, a new large service station, small service stations throughout the floor and a café/bar.

Baldwin Union Free School District

Baldwin, New York

Located in Baldwin, New York, Baldwin Middle School is one of the largest intermediary schools on Long Island. The original school typified the classic 1960s two story double loaded corridor layout. Over time and as the local population grew, the school required additional academic along with additional special program areas. Adding onto the original footprint was made possible by the large site which surrounds the school complex. Additions and alterations can often stitch together disparate parts of a building and introduce new collective areas in interstitial spaces.

Facing East 164th Street in the Bronx, Intermediate School 166 (now known as Roberto Clemente Campus and Grant Avenue Elementary) is a 1970s four storey masonry structure. The school consists of an orthogonal shaped volume merged with a segmented circular volume wedged tightly on half a city block that runs east-west from Morris Avenue to Grant Avenue along East 164th Street. The school has two entrances facing the corners of the block and is fenced in with very limited playyard area at the back of the building. The pre-cast elements at the exterior had significantly degraded as had the concrete work at the entrances and the fencing at the perimeter of the site.

New York City, USA

In 1998, the New York State Legislature approved a 5 year capital budget for the College, to allow for an expansion program to accommodate its anticipated increase in enrollment. Situated on 11th Avenue between West 58th and 59th Streets in New York City, a fourteen storey main tower sits on a four storey podium and is connected to Haaren Hall on the west side of the complex. The tower provides a full spectrum of educational programmatic elements: classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums and student lounges. An expansive outdoor civic commons graces the roof of the podium, providing students and faculty an unparalleled exterior space. The podium, which mitigates the grade change between 10th and 11th Avenues, also acts as a primary circulation connector.
