US Census Bureau Headquarters
Suitland, USA
Every ten years, the Census Bureau documents America and the staff triples to accommodate this task at Suitland. Flexibility also requires functioning with fewer staff in the years between. A model of sustainability, the bureau borders a nature preserve and community gardens. The two sweeping volumes notch together around a central court and the 41 ft wide wings allow natural light into every office. Vertically mounted oak panels add a brise-soleil while creating a rhythmic façade pattern. The façade blurs the distinction between building and landscape.
