cbstudioarchitecture is a collaborative firm founded by designers who have been involved in creating + managing architectural projects across Canada, the US and abroad for over 30 years. Our work speaks of simplicity of language + form from early planning stages to the final execution of details. We believe integrated design, the multi-disciplinary collaboration of creative individuals, is the foundation of a strong design approach.
cbs offers a team approach with equal emphasis on design + project management. Our atelier has a broad range of experience in project types and scales. Combined experience ranges from commercial high-rises and an airport to mixed-use, commercial retrofits, residential and interior design. We have also embraced architectural cultures from Helsinki to NYC, Rome, Dubai + Doha.
As creative + collaborative problem-solvers, our goal is to make sustainable architecture through considered + efficient responses. As planners, designers, technicians, managers, writers, artists + academics, we remain eternally curious + inspired by each next corner or horizon. We are cbstudio.
Heather Cameron began her academic life in Ottawa at Carleton University’s School of Architecture. The studio-based program opened a vast new window into the premise that Architecture could be created through a palimpsest of conceptual ideas. Drawings and memory infused projects became her passions. An academic studio in Rome became a temporary home and ever reinforced the relevance of memory to Architecture.
An opportunity to work abroad in Helsinki, Finland led to a new appreciation of living within a culture dedicated to design, an epic history, landscape, materials and light. New York City, graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and a return to the academic realm at Carleton and Rome resulted in an intensely rewarding period of life of teaching design.
A desire to return to New York and the practice of Architecture resulted in a new respect for the technical complexities of making. Being a part of the team that rebuilt 7 World Trade Center in the post 9/11 New York is an experience that will forever be coveted.
An opportunity to work and live in Doha, Qatar expanded the horizons once more. Heather Cameron now manages cbstudio architecture in the Inglewood neighbourhood of Calgary. She specializes in planning, urban retrofits, motherhood and abstract landscape paintings.
Christopher Brett once called Bonn + Islamabad + Athens home. Growing up around the world, he was exposed to the many architectural treasures of the world at an early age. Many of these memories were captured as images on grainy Super 8 film. Thus are the early influences on a world-view.
Brett began his academic life at Carleton University in pursuit of a degree in the History of Art & Architecture. With Architecture as the standout component, a diploma in Architectural Technology and a degree in Architecture followed at Carleton University’s School of Architecture. With the historical and technical foundations in place, design and drawings became his primary pursuit. Myths, technology and celestial observatories were the focus of his thesis. Teaching in Rome capped off his academic tenure.
New York City became Brett's professional back-drop with a technical position at Skidmore Owings and Merrill. Involvement in the Lester B Pearson International Airport and John Jay College of Criminal Justice projects are the result of his commitment and expertise.
Living and working in Doha, Qatar merged Islamic influences with a state of the art FIFA soccer stadium. As Design Principal at cbstudio architecture, design in Architecture remains of paramount importance to Christopher Brett. Whether a parti sketch or a fully developed master plan or tower, design leadership and excellence should never be compromised by project scale.
